Poseidon's Wall // Wavewatching
I've always been fascinated by water. How it moves and breathes, echoes and flows. In Spring 2024, I wondered how such sensations would sound as performed by a string quartet or piano. These are the results. I hope you feel something.Poseidon's Wall is an exploration of frequency extremities. The violin and cello parts fight against their pitch limitations, representing the ocean's surface and depths respectively. The viola melody floods through, colouring an ocean of sound.Wavewatching was inspired by Cage's meditative piano works and Debussy's impressionist soundscapes. It represents an afternoon spent watching the sea, taking in every ebb and flow. The lo-fi nature emulates fuzzy memories of time spent at the coastline, focused on the waves. The piece's score includes written descriptions to spark inspiration in the pianist and connect the ocean's movements with the music.A third piece, All Water, was written specifically for live performance. It consists of violin with recorded soundscapes of water, both artificial and natural. The violin melodies emulate water and wind, blurring the lines between melody and texture. An excerpt from the soundscape is included as an interlude track. If you are interested in performing any of these pieces, please contact me at [email protected].
